What Makes Great Website Photography? A Conversation with Lisette B

At Mino Design and Digital, we build websites that are meant to convert, and nothing undermines that faster than stock images or AI photos that feel like everyone else’s. Real photography of the real you is one of the most important parts of a website that works, which is why photography is built into the way we work.

One of the people we trust most with it is Lisette B, part of the small Dream Team we bring together for brand and website projects. I sat down with Lisette to talk about what actually makes website photography work, and why the best images start long before the shoot day.

Lisette B, brand and website photographer in Brisbane

Sarah, Mino Design and Digital: To kick things off, tell us a bit about what you bring to a website photography project.

Lisette B: What I bring to a branding and website photography project is a belief that great website imagery is about much more than simply taking professional photos.

Sarah: You have been doing this a long time. Where does a great set of website images actually begin?

Lisette: With more than 20 years of photography experience, I’ve learnt that the most effective images come from understanding the business first. Before a shoot, I take the time to learn about the client, their brand, their target audience, and how they want to be perceived. This allows me to create imagery that not only looks great but also supports the overall design and goals of their website.

Sarah: And beyond understanding the business, what else goes into getting ready?

Lisette: I help guide clients through the preparation process. From clothing choices and styling to locations, props, and colour palettes, I ensure everything aligns with their brand so the final images feel cohesive and professional.

Sarah: A lot of people feel nervous in front of the camera. How do you help them relax?

Lisette: One of the things my clients often tell me is how comfortable they feel during a shoot. Most people aren’t used to being in front of the camera, so I focus on creating a relaxed environment and providing plenty of guidance. This results in natural, authentic images rather than stiff, overly posed photographs.

Sarah: When it comes to a website specifically, what kinds of images does it actually need?

Lisette: I understand the importance of creating a variety of images that work well across a website, including banner images, team photos, lifestyle imagery, working shots, and images that allow room for text overlays and website design elements.

Sarah: Every brand has its own feel. How do you make sure the images match?

Lisette: I tailor my shooting and editing style to suit each brand. Whether the brief calls for light and airy, clean and modern, or darker and moodier imagery, I know how to use lighting, locations, equipment, and editing techniques to create the right look and feel.

Sarah: And when you bring it all together, what are you aiming for?

Lisette: My goal is always to provide website developers and their clients with a versatile library of professional images that not only look beautiful but also help tell the story of the business and connect with the right audience.

This is exactly why Lisette is part of our Dream Team. When the photography is planned around your brand and the website it is going to live on, everything works harder, from your homepage banner through to your about page. You end up with real images of real people, ready for a site that is built to convert.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is website photography?
Website photography is professional imagery created specifically for a website, including banner images, team photos, lifestyle shots, working images, and photos with room for text and design elements. It is planned around your brand and the way the site is built, so every image earns its place.
How is brand photography different from regular photography?
Brand and website photography starts with understanding the business, its audience, and how it wants to be perceived, then plans the styling, locations and look to match. The result is a cohesive library of images that tells your story, rather than a set of nice but disconnected photos.
What kinds of images does my website need?
Most websites need a mix: banner images for headers, team and headshot photos, lifestyle and working shots, and images with space for text overlays. Having that variety means your designer can build every page properly without running short of the right image.
